What You Need to Start Sewing at Home: A Beginner's Guide
Mariia KotenkoAre you excited to dive into the world of sewing but not sure where to start?
I prepared for you a list of the essential items you need to get started on your sewing journey at home:
- Sewing machine: while there are many options out there, choose one that fits your budget and skill level. Brands like Brother, Singer, and Janome are great for beginners.
In my atelier I have sewing machine Brother NS80e, very functional, it has all I need.
- Iron and Ironing Board: ironing is essential. Pressing your fabric and seams as you sew will make your projects look more professional. For home purpose you need:
- steam iron,
- ironing board,
- sleeve board - essential for all clothes with sleeves.
A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a more professional ironing board, the Reliable Ironing Board 120IB. As for the iron, I currently use a regular one with a steam function. Overall, I'm satisfied with it, but I do dream of buying a professional iron in the future.
- Basic Sewing Tools:
- scissors: a good pair of fabric scissors is crucial. Also, have a pair of small scissors for trimming threads.
- measuring tape: accurate measurements are key to a well-fitting garment.
- seam ripper: mistakes happen! A seam ripper will help you correct them easily.
- marking tools: tailor’s chalk, fabric markers, or pencils are needed to mark your fabric.
I strongly recommend you to buy Frixion marker pen. This pencil leaves with the help of the iron or the washing.
- Needles: selecting the correct needle for each fabric type is crucial. Using the wrong needle can damage the fabric and jeopardize the success of your project. You will need:
- set of needles for sewing machine,
- set of hand sewing needles.
In my work, I use needles from the brand Schmetz. They are widely available in many stores and online.
- Pins and Clips
- pins: use pins on fabrics where punctures do not leave marks,
- clips: sewing clips are perfect for holding together fabrics and won't leave holes in your fabric. Great for quilt binding and very useful when sewing with leather or vinyl.
- Patterns: ready-made makö clothing sewing patterns with detailed instructions.
